Running Clique
No running since the first week of June for me, which has been a total ball ache. Things are healing and feeling better however I'm now woefully out of shape.

Managed to get out for 4 miles this morning before it gets too hot.

Starting to rethink my excercise goals, now I’m past 40 and the joints aren’t what they used to be and the dad bod is creeping in. Done two half marathons this year (Brighton in Feb and Hackney in May) and both almost killed me, Hackney was especially tough. Think I’m going to knock racing on the head going forward, I’ve done the London Marathon and several half’s which I can be happy with, but the distance is too much at the moment. Maybe when the kids are a bit older and I’m less knackered all the time I’ll reconsider but going forward I’ll be doing 10k’s max and running just for the enjoyment and to stave off the inevitable rise of the dad bod.

Back to Chamonix for 3 weeks (yay working remotely) and have done my first trail runs in almost a year. Blowing out of my arse on the first 9 and a bit km with 350m of ascent and felt like death in the heat. Somehow almost hit a 400m and half-mile PB on the 7 and a bit km one with 400m of ascent yesterday, despite still feeling like my lungs were collapsing. This was after spending a week climbing and mountaineering up high (claimed the Dent du Geant!) which would've helped with acclimitisation and a bit of fitness.

Anyone over 30 needs to be lifting weights 2-3 times a week if they want to stay mobile in their dotage IMO. Heavy squats, deadlifts, presses, rows. You won't find anything better for joint and bone health, as well as maintaining muscle mass into middle-age. Forget about getting hench or anything, I just do it to remain mobile. A bit of shape around the chest and shoulders is a happy bonus

Was thinking of going out this lunchtime, but it's already too warm for my liking. Will go Friday morning instead.

This is 100% what I'm going to have to improve and has been the main cause behind my injuries the past couple of years.

Just back from a 5 miler. Feels great to be able to get out at lunchtimes again now that the weather has cooled down a bit. Summer pretty much wipes me out from a running perspective as I struggle to run in anything over about 20 degrees. Starting to get my miles back up again now.

Sticking by my decision to give up racing though, did two halves earlier in the year - Brighton and Hackney, and hated both. Just don’t enjoy them anymore. Short term goal is to just comfortably run a 10k every 3-4 days.

I’m now marathon ready for London this weekend. Training is done apart from maybe 5km or 2. Massages are done and I feel ready to go. Just got to collect my race number on Saturday morning. Be glad to get it done, the heat during the summer was horrible to train in but it got done.

Good luck mon.

The first mile isn’t far from my place so me and the kids usually come down to watch. We’re usually by Charlton Lido which is the first left turn off the main road you start on.

I've been disappointed with myself the past 6 weeks, not really been out at all. But as duffers says, now it's not insanely hot I should be getting back out there and trying to push on from 10k.
