Can't see the benefit of changing the coins because retailers will have to round everything up which is against their selling beliefs (10.99 looks cheer than £11), I would imagine the mint will reduce the number of coins printed because we are fast going cashless anyway.

It seems the reason shops used an amount not up to the next full dollar or quid was to make cash registers more difficult to fiddle by employees.  According to Bill Bryson.

£10.99 for card payment, £11.00 for cash.  Simples, seeing as you correctly state, we’re heading towards a cashless society which Covid has assisted.

There are £1 shops all over the place, but in Inverness I saw a 99p shop. Imagine the logistical nightmare. You'd need a penny change for every transaction. Are the clientele going to say, "OK mate, keep the change"? In Scotland FFS sake?

If you ditch 1p / 2p then how do you get change from a £2 when the item(s) come to £1.97?

Or are you proposing adding at least 1% to loads of low priced items so that it can't happen?

In Italy pre-Euro they would give you sweets instead of small change if you're items came to 497 Lire or somesuch. No one bothered with the small coins as they were virtually worthless. Most agreeable compromise i thought.  Big Grin

I never said to ditch the 2p.  I said to make it as small as the old half penny.

If you can recall, that got taken out of circulation as it’s value was insignificant, as is 1p today.

Re £1.97, pay by card and it’s £1.97, pay by cash and it’s £1.98.

It's almost certainly an age thing but I nearly always pay cash. I like to see how my notes are going down as a reminder how much I've got through. I had a nightmare one week this summer, went to a wedding in Somerset, card only all day, and a test at Lords, card only again. The following midweek I checked the bank account and I'd been cleaned out. Also, it takes forever to remember some of the charges, I always reckon someone has been robbing me. Cash never lies.

So you're saying to increase costs at a time when loads are struggling... Did you get made the next Chancellor?
