Week 2 figures (to 15th Jan) are out and again we have a large increase in numbers of deaths above normal. There were over 18k deaths in total in the week and to put that in context, throughout the whole pandemic there have been only 3 weeks with higher deaths. The 5YA for the week is just under 14k and the worst week 2 in the last decade was 2015 which had 16.2k. When you take into account the high death toll for the last 10 months which will have unfortunately already accounted for a number of weak and vulnerable then this number is big. If there was ever a figure that shut up the 'it's just flu' mob then this should be it.

For E&W for the period that we have had covid it pushes the excess deaths over 90k.

Looking at where the excess deaths are, compared with 2020, for each age group after 2 weeks of 2021 the numbers are already over 1k for each of the 5 year groupings over 70. Increases in the hundreds are seen in all 5 year groups over the age of 40. It increases as it goes up the age groups starting with 105 in the 40-44 group all the way up to 1,788 in the over 90s. Overall we have had nearly 10k more deaths in 2021 than we did in 2020 after 2 weeks.

Wouldn't worry about it, the three likely scenarios are that the German politician who leaked it has misunderstood data from the EMA (not understanding what lower bounds are), is mixing up the numbers tested with the efficacy rate (8.25% of those tested in the Oxford trial were over 65) or is being a twat (deliberately using the lower bound to make the vaccine look bad). The EMA decision is being made on Friday and we'll have a better understanding of things then, I'd imagine they may be cautious for use on over 65s with a preference to the other vaccines while promoting it for under 65s.

More concerning is the EU putting pressure on Pfizer and Moderna to notify all deliveries outside the EU to third countries (now the UK) with a view to withholding deliveries as a result of AZ apparently moving significant quantities of the EU stockpiles of their vaccine made in Belgium to the UK resulting in a shortage of the AZ vaccine in the EU. Now if Sturgeon wasn't a moron and hadn't leaked the UK vaccine strategy this wouldn't be happening.
