Running Clique
Forced myself out for a quite speedy (for me anyway!) 5k, felt lazy tracking my colleague finishing the 300k northern traverse this afternoon. That is truly next level stuff.

Mileage will gradually taper off over the next few weeks though this week is still quite a high mileage one culminating in an unpleasant progressive 15miler on Saturday. Everything aches at present.

Good stuff.

I'm nursing a slightly twanged hamstring after a 10-mile road race on Sunday in Helston (Cornwall).

I say road race, it took in a section of beach and a brutally hilly farm track  Confused

Once that's recovered, I'll be working towards getting a second half PB of the year at Cardiff in October.

Managed to get out this morning after a rather hectic period. Kids watching the marathon has given me a much deserved kick up the arse. Will try and get out Wednesday, Friday and Sunday next week with any luck.

Ran 5k at 23:55 yesterday - which is far from a PB this is certainly a PB from Fat me that in Jan couldnt run a mile, but since im 12 years older than my 18min 5k times i am satisfied with the pace and not going to push for faster currently.

Looking to step it up to 10k runs now - any advise on best programme to follow etc?

Back out for 10km today after mostly here and there 5's avoiding the immense heat, work/life getting in the way for about a month and feeling good for it.

I've decided i need to start running and would like to tap into your expertise, if you don't mind chaps?!

I'm 43 and I quit smoking 6 months ago (after 20 years). Whilst this was a huge accomplishment, i'm aware that quitting on its own isn't really enough - i have to improve my cardio.

How would you advise starting? I've heard good things about the Couch to 5K app, but are there any other apps that would help a 'newbie'?

Also, equipment - any recommendations for decent footwear? I will most likely run on paths/tarmac and/or on running machines in the gym.

Any advice is most appreciate chaps.

I did couch to 5k at during first lockdown, it's perfectly structured to get you moving further each time. Would definitely recommend that. Also, some half decent running shoes made a big difference and stopped me getting so many blisters.

This.

Especially the part about decent shoes, a cheap Sports Direct job will ruin your feet and knees.

You don't need to spend a fortune, I got some £120 adidas running shoes in the sale for £70 and they lasted for ages.

Also can I recommend you look into doing yoga as well, one of the main problems with getting old is how inflexible you become. Yoga, or as a minimum some decent regular stretching, will really help with your mobility.
