Depends on your definition of shocker I guess.  Townsend was ripped a new one at Southampton away, almost all their attacks came down our left and then he was hugely and directly at fault for their winner.  I also acknowledge he’s up against one of the best full backs in the league. But the reality was he couldn’t live with him.

I never disagreed with your assessment of last nights performance for DF, mate. But to suggest that it was a synopsis of his whole season is miles off.

I guess its just what you expect your fullback to do defensively. For me you ALWAYS mark what's in front of you as they are your responsibility, especially from a cross from the opposite side. CT was putting pressure on the man between him and Kipre for Saints winner, as he should. But they had an overload, which is a team issue not a CT issue. So for me, he wasn't "hugely and directly" at fault. Also both goals came down our right not left channels.

Being a full back is the most thankless task on the pitch.

Especially if you play for West Brom where full backs are targetted for scapegoating second the step onto the pitch.

With extra special hate for left sided full backs.

Can you tell me the other fullbacks who have been scapegoated over the last ten years or so as I can’t think of any. DF and CT have been poor previous seasons with DF being most improved this season. CT has been poor but has put in better performances over the last 3-4 games.

Name any of our fullbacks, they've been spacegoated. It's a really common thing.

Any of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's had to put up with most of our fullbacks being useless.

Hodson, Harbey, Darton, Parsley, Edwards, Potter, McDermott etc.

Its a default setting.

There were the odd half-decent ones mixed in, such as Nicky Reid, Lilwall, Paul Agnew. But they were considered decent due to the dross we usually had.

Yes, pretty much all of them at some point or another. For the last 5 years, CT and DF have had it relentlessly. Gibbs always got pelters for his "lack of heart" and his "poor defending".

Allan Nyom - Always slagged off for being clumsy and unreliable.

Said to my lad last night. We could build a Left Back, best parts of Ashley Cole, Paolo Maldini, Roberto Carlos and Alphonso Davies. Our fans would still moan about them, and go on about the left back of whatever team we're playing, whatever level, and only wish we had their left back.

Ridgewell got a fair bit of slack and so did Billy Jones if I remember right. In general I think it's a position we have ignored or put at the bottom of the priority list for ages now. It's such an important role on the pitch and we've been happy to have CB's, wingers or midfielders fill in and provide backup.

So common then please name.

Mattock, Ridgewell, Shorey, Jones, Gibbs, CT and DF, Dawson, Nyom, Pocognoli to name but a few.

Steven Reid is the last full back I can think of who was actually liked.
