Guilty conscience?
That's odd. It may have been more alarming and uncomfortable for the young lady to see someone suddenly crossing the road as soon as he saw her?
I still do. If I can't cross the road I give a wide berth and a friendly greeting.
I think you underestimate both the intelligence of the woman and the strength of the message....perhaps that is where the problem lies.
I really don't and that would seem completely unnatural to me. Sometimes you cannot actually see whether it's a male or female until you get pretty close so a sudden change of direction would look odd. And what on earth has that got to do with intelligence or message? It's perfectly natural to walk past someone in the street you know.

Such double standards by the Met
BLM and Extinction Rebellion they held back even when in some instances it was wrong to do so.
Tonight they pile in and drag women away, they failed to communicate with the organisers and have shown the Met needs a complete overhaul starting at the top

I'd have hoped the Met's number one priority would be to ensure that all of those women got safely home.

Your statement that a man crossing the road to make a woman feel safer is displaying a guilty conscience makes any further conversation seem pointless.

Sarcasm. Apologies.
I think it's completely unnatural for me to cross a road to avoid passing someone on a street and you don't. So we agree to disagree.

It all depends on the context....as you well know.
I'd check the definition of sarcasm by the way....and I'm not being sarcastic.

About 25 years ago I was walking home half pissed in Bearwood from a Saturday night out and I always walked on the opposite side if I saw a woman. A girl in front of me on the other side of the road hid up an entry.
I totally get it.
I've often intervened though when I see potential trouble. I'm a big bloke and not scared to wade in and I rescued a girl being accosted by a druggie in a doorway in Brum about 5 years ago.
I'm very aware of a woman's lot, as much as any guy can be. Blokes are invariably taller and stronger and it'd be like most of us fearing a 6ft 6 bouncer coming after us.

Fair enough.
I'm not being shitty to anyone but crossing over the road to avoid passing someone on the street is something I've never done or thought about doing. I find the thought of it just weird to be honest. In any context or situation.
