QPR couldn’t afford his wages for a second year.  Had to cut their wage bill under FFP

We're definitely not in a position where we're able to sign improvements on what we've already got with each signing, it's perfectly OK to have a few carefully placed stocking filler signings which is what someone like Hayden would be. Similar to McNair, there to be called upon if required and means we're not down to the bare bones if we lose a couple to injury.

I’m not sure we are in that place yet Ted… plenty of teams in the Champ look less ready than we do. Take Luton on Monday night, they have parachute money but still had a couple kids making their debuts in the team due to a couple injuries.

We have got a strong first XI and cover in most positions. Last night we made XI changes, it would take a hell of an injury crisis for us to come near to fielding a side like that in the league.

Right now we need 2-3 carefully scouted signings to add the missing bits to our first XI.

But at the right price, the occasional careful squad depth addition, an experienced pro who will be good to work with some of the youngsters shouldn't be scoffed at. Pieters was a great signing for a couple of seasons for this very reason.

This isn't me saying we should absolutely sign Hayden either.

Could be a Pieters, but sounds more Chalobah to me. 20 odd games in 2 years, at 3 different clubs, does not suggest he's chomping at the bit to play football.

I agree with your principal Ted, but I think this is one to swerve.

I don’t have an issue with signing a few older players, but Hayden is on over £50k a week and has barely featured in the last few years. Newcastle have FFP challenges so will push hard for a chunk of his wages to be covered, and even if we’re paying £10-15k/wk of it I think we can invest that half million quid into something more long term.

My first thought when I saw Hayden mentioned was Chalobah Mk 2. A player moving towards the end of his career and never really achieved a great deal aside from being a bit part player in very average teams. Exactly the type of player we want to be steering clear of.

In fairness, I think the entire transfer market normally quietens down between the first weekend of the Premier League season and the last couple of days of August year upon year. It won't be long till we can have our annual moan about why we didn't sign certain players who we'd never hear of before until they were linked on Twitter a few hours before or how our season will collapse because we didn't get Josh Onomah or Steven Alzate signed in time (both free agents btw - Onomah hasn't had a club for a year and Alzate clearly isn't the world beater he was hyped up to be, what a surprise!).

But, but....Steve Bruce and his son Alex knew all about them.
