Regularly moan about all this to my son in law..hes a lino in championship.
There isnt an assessor in the stands anymore. A video of the game is reviewed later. Not that this answers the question..just posting for info re assessing.
As you can imagine..he gets some stick off me.

Correspondence should be made public. At least it might explain why/why not. May not agree with it, but we'd know why.

FWIW i think the handball wasn't a pen (arm is in a natural position) but the trip/shove probably was.

Would also be progressive and should be public

Should we also get players and managers to explain why they constantly cheat, try to gain an advantage, bollock the ref even when he is right and they’re wrong etc etc?

I really don’t know what difference anyone thinks this’ll make. The refs get shit wrong. If they explain why they did/didn’t give a penalty, pundits will sit there with 45 different replays saying his explanation doesn’t match what we’re looking at….. in slo mo, from a ton of angles. And the answer will always be, literally always, the ref saw it once and gave what he thought he saw at high speed from one angle. Literally every single time.

Beyond pointless IMO.

Why? They'd only refuse to answer or spout utter bullshit.

Can we ask players who make mistakes to come out after every match and explain why they missed a shot / tackle / pass?

VAR across the whole league or not at all.

I’ve seen a lot of decisions down the years where I’m sure a ref rejecting what is so obvious that 5000 people have just pointed it out in unison that the immediate response of the little power driven hitler in black just can’t help but respond by being oppositional. Even ironing that out would be a start

In terms of the pens on Saturday.

The shove on BTA looked a pen to me. If it was the other way around I'd have no qualms if it was given against us. It's a foul. It shouldn't make a difference and impact a decision but was it too early in the first game of the season to award a potentially contentious penalty? I really can't think of why a referee wouldn't give it.

The second shout as above, really. If that was given against us, I couldn't complain. The defender dives in, misses the ball and takes down a player. Admittedly there's arguably not enough contact to force a player down and it would have been soft. But it's a foul, isn't it?

The third one, the handball, would have been incredibly harsh to give. I can understand why the referee waved the appeals away. It was close in proximity and the shot was well hit. The defender had little chance to get out of the way. But it falls into the category of 'seen them given'. I'd feel aggrieved if it was given against us.

Ultimately it's just poor officiating and there should be way to make poor performances accountable. Relegating an official isn't the answer. It's bizarre that a refs performance is deemed poor so you palm him off on the division below. That doesn't solve anything. Neither would forcing officials to explain why they've had a bad game, as they can easily spin lies and outright refuse to answer a question.

It’s not about forcing anything. It’s about accountability and progression. You are quite right about the idiocy of divisional demotions

It wont iron anything out. He’ll say he gave what he saw. Every single time. So what good will that do?

VAR was brought in with tons of slow mo angles and people still argue about decisions anyway.

Players cheat, mess up, bollock the ref even when he’s right. Should they explain this every week too?

How about just accept they get some wrong and get on with the game.
