We need to prioritise players who need game time e.g. ahead of the Euros (the Turkish lad), players reaching the end of their contract and players for teams in financial trouble who need to trim the wage bill.
Benfica are in massive financial trouble. They need to sell players.
And that’s what may go against us with this transfer as we can only commit to loans.

We tried for him in the summer, and have decent relations with Benfica but he’s a first team regular with 10 in 21 games.
Bloody good striker and Benfica’s financial issues will give us hope.
If you read the article, Massi says ‘a deal is unlikely’....why bloody report it then.
And don’t know how good our relations are with Benfica. Pretty sure they were getting pissed off with us changing the goal posts with the Krov deal.
Think it was more a case that we know Benfica, and finally know what needs to be done to arrange a deal... we’ll know the agents to deal with etc.
Agree with your latter point that Benfica need to sell more so than loan, but there won’t be too many buyers for players this window regardless.

According to Sky Sports:
WEST BROM WALK AWAY FROM SEFEROVIC INTEREST
West Bromwich Albion made initial inquiries about Benfica striker Harris Seferovic, but have walked away with any deal now highly unlikely, SSN has been
Sam Allardyce is determined to sign a new striker this month, but Albion’s finances make it look inevitable that will need to be a loan deal.
Benfica have Seferovic under a long-term contract and would only be interested in selling him. Mbaye Diagne at Galatasaray remains very much on West Brom’s radar.

Never done it in the big leagues though which would be my concern.

We aren’t going to sign anyone who will be guaranteed to perform at this level

We have walked away from it at the moment
You've guessed it penny pinching. Was told to trim squad and wages and still wanting more...... Sam is frustrated.

Correct.
We wouldn't pay and they wouldn't come.

How much did Newcastle spend on Joelinton? That was a sizeable enough amount for someone who's scored fugg all. There are no guarantees anywhere, you just need to put faith in your scouts/manager to pick up the players that are proven to fit the style of play you want to commit to.

Newcastle paid £40m for Joelinton... a player who had mostly played as a wide-forward or winger in his career, but bizarrely gave him the number 9 shirt and played him up top.
