I am not arguing whether this is a good or bad thing, but this kind of incident would be terminal to a politician's career in times past.
On Johnson much is made of his 2 wins as London Mayor and his ability to reach out beyond the traditional tory support. Not sure that was the case even then as turnouts for mayoral election are lower than general elections and it is more of a case who can get their support out. But even it was true, unlikely to be true now given his record since 2015.There is simply no way in which he would be elected London Mayor now - might be a bit tight to hold onto his current seat given how London politics is now.
He's done much worse than that, he threatened to beat up a journalist he didn't like and was caught on film for fucks sakes. The closest he's gotten to power was as foreign secretary, and he was an utter embarrassment and completely out of his depth. Despite that he's still going to be PM.
