Germany, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain and Italy are all members of the Council of Europe, are all subject to the ECHR and none have ratified any legislation that would sidestep it under national law as was proposed by Straw and none have contemplated leaving it as is being pushed by the new mainstream right wing party in this country. And now it's the ECHR's fault that supposedly we can't "secure our borders" when they're subject to the ECHR, aren't having these issues and aren't a bloody island.
Australia literally has problems with human rights abuses against aboriginal Australians, especially with regards to incarcerating children (particularly in the Northern Territories) linked to children killing themselves in prison and that's escalated to the fucking UN and would be struck down by the ECHR if it applied there. And if we spent the amount of money that Australia has done on a now scrapped asylum seeker detention policy (that didn't work, hence why they scrapped it - the number of asylum seekers went up) you'd be having a fit. One facility cost £250m to build in order to hold 22 people ffs.
Absolutely bizarre how supposed liberal conservatives disavow the principles of liberalism and seek to pander to authoritarians or encourage them and have such great reverence to and trust in the power of the state that they want the state to have absolute control of how human rights are applied with zero accountability.
