We have to accept that there will be more deaths as a result of covid Dekka. It's a new disease and we have to accept that people will die from it especially at this time of year and over the next few months. Looking at the current weekly deaths figures for E&W (week 44 to 5th Nov latest published) we had 10,887 deaths total, compare that with the 5 year average to 2019 which was 9,891 which tallies with your 1k a week extra deaths. But comparing it with 2020 figures (for week 45 to 6th Nov) which were 12,254 which were 2.5k over the 5YA shows how much we have 'improved'.
The next few months will be tough and I hope and pray that people realise that we do need the boosters and we do need to keep up the basic measures (masks and washing hands) but there is some optimism in the current figures tinged with the realism of the extra inevitable deaths.
One final stat from the ONS for week 44.
Deaths involving influenza and pneumonia mentioned on the death cert = 2,086.
Deaths involving Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate = 995.
It really has been a shit show over the last couple of years but despite the governments best efforts to fuck it up we have got to a point where as a nation we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, we're not at the end yet though and we do need to buckle in until spring.
