This board, as a microcosm of the world

Social media is now a difficult place. That's the way it is. We are not all in the pubs any more amongst mates. We are all content producers. people need to remember that.

There is a bored specifically for politics, which I'm pretty sure I've never posted on, not because I don't like or have views on politics, I just prefer not to discuss them online because there's just not enough debate and too much anger.
The art of true debate should be to be open to have your mind changed and not just to change the mind of others. Now it's just a shouting match, with no concession given from either side, as they already know they are right.

Why it has to keep infiltrating the non-politics bored is beyond me, unless there's just not enough people to shout at over there.

It is off-putting, but it's avoidable, or easy to read without getting involved (I advise this approach, otherwise you may miss a gem). No need to walk away though IMO, it's still a good place.

Just as a thought, is the politics board really helpful in engendering an Albion community?

I don't think so. It just adds to the acrimony with petty point scoring them going into the football part of the board. There's some more interested in standing on their soapbox there than ever having anything to add regards Albion.

Maybe it should be binned?

It's the internet at the end of the day, this place especially wouldn't be half as good if there wasn't a decent degree of piss-taking, point scoring and petty sniping.

Topics like this and the Charlie Kirk one are easy enough for the nods to move across to the politics bored if they feel they are detracting too much from the Albion content.

Once you cut through all the nonsense (and I'm as guilty as anyone else for shit posting sometimes) there is some really interesting discussion on the political threads. I agree with barely any of Proth's political standpoints, but for me he's one of the most insightful perspective to read. Googling some of the things he's come out with I've learned more than I would covering the same topics in an echo chamber where everyone just agrees with one another.

Would be to the detriment of the whole site if we were to can it.

You'd fit right in over on dotcom  Big Grin

On a more serious point this is largely the issue, I will hardly ever block on SM, I don't have anyone muted on here, no matter how much I disagree with them. Individual self created echo chambers are the root cause of a lot of the problems with discourse online.

If things are 'toxic' (what a nonsense this is by the way, but that's another matter) don't engage, but don't withdraw.

I cannot recall this board ever being the polite, rational debating chamber as some are recalling going as far back as when it was first started. The reason the Express and Star closed down Hawthorns Heartbeat and Molineux Mix was because they were antagonistic, and a pain for the mods to look after. I’m sure there were financial reasons also, but the point is people didn’t politely discuss even the football back then let alone politics or questions on morality.

People get older, people’s priorities change and people stop or start posting due to a variety of reasons, but we have the navel gazing ‘things aren’t what they used to be’ posts every year and the main thing that has changed is we are all getting older and sometimes wiser, sometimes less so and that seems to very much depend on the subject up for discussion.

Message boards such as this are for predominantly middle aged people, and the subjects that crop up are a reflection of where we all are currently. Any former posters or lurkers who now reside on Twitter or Facebook cannot seriously have any real argument about this place being too argumentative, polarised, politicised or even cliquey.

Last point irony of calls for the Politics section to be canned, is the whopping great Charlie Kirk 43 page thread that is still rumbling on, on the main section of the board and has dominated an English Football Club message board for a week.

The opening post is correct this site is a reflection on society but a very middle aged one. We played on Saturday I commented in the game, went to the game and defended the performance and players from imo ott criticism but there is fug all else to say until the next game as far as I can see.

So I gather you don't have a question over the best lawnmower recommendations or any issues with your broadband provider then?

Amusingly this sums up the state of internet discourse in general on the most micro level possible.

We didn't play well on Saturday and concerns were raised. Some were valid and measured, others were wild and OTT, some people didn't think there were any issues at all and looked to shut down all dissenting voices legitimate or otherwise, meltdowns were declared, clappers were happy.... Nobody could agree.

Saturday evening on here was basically the entire internet in a microcosm.

Josh was the happiest clapper that evening.

I adopted a “that was poor but no need to panic” approach which makes me the most reasonable and measured and therefore the best.
