It's hardly like it's an endorsement, just a recognition that Trump is going to be the most influential individual globally - once you discount God.

Considering the person of the year is supposedly chosen as per, the person that has had the most impact on  our lives and the news, and is the embodiment of the year as whole, we can't really choose Putin or Kim Jung Un, so Trump is the next best thing.
