If you are conservative by nature, accepting change slowly the anything goes attitude of liberalism without stigma can appear seedy I guess.
After all we live in an era where homosexuality is very much publicised on TV and there is a very open and highly publicised debate on gender ideology that appears to get too much airplay and is seen as extremely strange to many people.
I guess that mixed in with a fear of mass immigration is a pretty good stick to beat liberal values with.
I’d like to say I’m only guessing. Those aren’t my views being quite liberal myself.
I've a lot of family in the states, typically card carrying democrats, but some are either not voting or voting trump, 4 reasons
1) inflation, "gas" prices have gone up by about 50% I was paying $3.00 - $3.50 when I was there in the summer, I had for years been paying $2.00 - $2.50. FWIW worth the price of a pint has increased from the $5 - $7 I was paying to $8 - $9.00
2) immigration, running at about 3M a year "undocumented " under Biden, that's the equivalent of about 500k people arriving on small boats here. People have been losing their minds here over 50k per annum in small boats, imagine if it was 10 times that number. In Northern, Coastal, and Mid-west "sanctuary" states and cities it's now having an impact.
3) Police reform act, post George Floyd. Objective to make the police "more accountable" but the Dems have effectively lost the Police
4 ) Afghan withdrawal, dead soldiers and billions worth of kit left behind. The Dems never really banked on the military but they have lost them completely.
If you've lost the Police and the military, illegal immigration is considered to be out of control and gas prices have risen by >50% frankly you hope and pray you're opposition is a lunatic like Donald Trump. If the Dems were fighting literally anyone else they would get crushed in the election. As it happens the Dems got lucky, they could have been up against Nikki Haley, and its just too close to call.
I’d liken it to the Brexit vote here. Lots of people are dissatisfied with their current lifestyle and because of this they want change and Trump’s populism is offering simple answers to very difficult problems that he cannot solve. With striking similarity with Brexit, Trump will be worse than Harris, and those that vote for him will suffer more than those that don’t, but by the time they realise it’ll be too late, and Trump and his cronies will have by then blamed everyone else for holding back the MAGA revolution.
Absolutely bang on.
Simple answers offered for fearful, confused people desperate to return to 'simpler' times.

Trump played his part in the Afghan withdrawal, Biden executed it.

I find it slightly amusing that the person arrested is a Trump supporter and attends regular Trump rallies. He just drives around with guns in his car on a fake homemade licence plate for the heck of it.

It's not as if worldwide economic difficulties have a precedent for giving power to vindictive, foreigner blaming dickheads

The guy with the guns who was arrested yesterday has been released from custody => obviously no assassination attempt. He's a Trump supporter.
I don't suppose the media will be as quick to report this as they did his arrest yesterday.

1) Conversely, there's been massive job generation, low unemployment and regular new stock market highs. The economy is now buoyant.
2) As you'll probably be aware, a bipartisan bill was created which would have done more to secure the border than anything for decades. Trump didn't want it to be passed because he thought it would harm his election chances, so it was voted down by MAGA Republicans. Where the blame should go for this is clear and it's not on Biden/Harris
3) Trump's plan is to make police immune from prosecution. The police might be happy, but it doesn't take much to realise that it's an insane plan.
4) Biden was left to implement what Trump had already agreed. Trump has regularly shown his total disregard for the the military - "suckers and losers" etc plus recently his unauthorised photo op at the revered military Arlington Cemetery where he was pictured standing at a grave smiling.
Anyway, regardless of the above, how anyone can think that supporting the election of a deranged, senile, despotic, habitually lying madman who is incapable of holding a thought and, thanks to the Supreme Court, would be immune from prosecution for everything he did as President as long as he could call it an official act, is staggering. There couldn't be a more unfit person to be President and yet he's amassed a mindless cult of tens and millions. What a seriously screwed up country...

Playing devil's advocate there are also any number of homeless people 'living' in storm drains, areas of grinding poverty and drug addiction issues which appear to be spiralling........

American Capitalism, goes further than a president. No matter how bad Trump would be.
Edit: American Neoliberalism.
