Proth is right.
It's not nice, but it's right.
Trump is getting in with a landslide, especially now.
Americans are also very, very obsessed with the cost of 'gas' and it's gone up severely under Biden, many Americans do not care it has across the world, to them that's all that matters over anything else.

The optics are being grossly distorted in Trump's favour incidentally.
I don't agree with anything Trump stands for; economic and military isolationism, anti-immigrant sentiment, barely disguised contempt for pretty much everybody.
However. The optics are that the whole apparatus of state (and liberal media) has been lined up against Trump. The optics are that it has culminated in an attempt on his life. The optics are that he bravely dodged a bullet and immediately stood with a clenched fist salute as a representation of virility.
Since its foundation the US has been deeply suspicious of the power of the State, fearing the same sort of tyranny it fought to escape from. Just read the US constitution. This is so deeply embedded in the American psyche, and so different from many people here who (wrongly in my opinion) believe that State to be a benign entity.
First Hillary Clinton managed to insult enough swing voters to cast their ballots for Trump. Then the Democrats conspired to select a terminally gaffe prone septegenerian career politician in Trump's stead, and allowed him to go back on the understanding that he was a single term transitional President - he did pick Harris at veep for a reason you know.
Trump is (incredibly, to me) presenting himself as the anti-establishment saviour of democracy against the deep state. The Democrats have done little or nothing to counter that, and as Americans are so deeply suspicious of the State it's hardly surprising that they will turn to Trump again.
Aye. About right that.
Someone could have been killed

The optics in the States this week set one guy barely capable of walking up a flight of stairs, incapable of remembering the name of his VP and a key allie against a guy who literally dodged a bullet and then pulled himself from the floor with a clenched fist salute. Given the binary choice I'm pretty sure who a majority of Americans would want leading their country and representing them on the world stage.
This is a crisis built in liberal America, with its roots back in the lack of a response to the structural issues brought about by globalisation and the GFC as over here and in Europe.
I'm in the swing state of Georgia for a bit this summer, and Ruby Red Florida and South Carolina. I expect the front yards to be adorned with Trump placards across all three.
Do you know what the word 'literally' actually means? Did he see the bullet coming and do a swift move to his left?

Anyone hear his running mate on the news earlier?
Something along the lines of “We were discussing which Islamic country will acquire Nukes first. Maybe Iran? No,probably the UK now Labour have been voted in”.
I despair. (He obviously doesn’t count Pakistan as an Islamic country with Nukes or doesn’t know).

So fear of the power of the state will drive US voters to elect someone who has made it quite clear he will become a dictator and will remain that way for as long as he chooses, before handing it over to a family member or someone who's as equally deranged as him?! All aided and abetted by the highest court in the land. Talk about self-defeating and yet it will affect all of us

When the orange maniac is elected (which looks pretty sure now), that will appear pretty mild compared to the ignorant garbage that will emanate out of the White House in the future. It's at times like this that I'm glad I'm getting old.

I posted this above, link to Guardian. You can see what's in store.
And Trump didn't literally dodge a bullet. The jammy bastard was missed by the bullet. Fortunately he wasn't killed but Fox and the other enabling organs (and Moscow bots) will proclaim this as proof of divine intervention to be lapped up by the nationalist protestant fundamentalist head bangers who will be exerting even more insane influence.
Now I'm back to my Silver anniversary with a walk around the garden with Mrs H while we still can....

Good post, but I'd change the word 'fortunately'.

The simple difference between Trump and Biden. Biden's speech in the aftermath of this attack was statesman-like, conciliatory and calming. Compare this with Trump's comments after Nancy Pelosi was attacked in her home. Words to the effect of 'the people have shown they won't stand for her actions', and 'How's her old man, anyone seen him?' Her husband was badly beaten around the head leaving him with a fractured skull. He was 82.
Trump is a despicable and very dangerous man, those praising him really just don't WANT to see it.
