It wouldn't have been as bad as it is if we hadn't suppressed interest rates for over a decade and stoked systemic inflation either.
Yes but let's not forget - and I have mentioned this in numerous posts - the excessive monetary growth came about due to Tory austerity. Monetary policy doesn't work at the zero-lower bound, you have to use fiscal policy in a liquidity trap. Had the Tories not done austerity, we would have had more normal interest rates, a better capability to fight the pandemic, better public services, no Brexit and be in a better position to cope with the war-induced rise in inflation (that is certainly the price we must pay for our long term security).
I note that sound money is now completely out of the window with respect to Liz Truss and her dangerous tax cuts when inflation is at 9.4%. Listening to IDS on the weekend outline Laffer(voodoo economics) Curve nonsense was just unbelievable. At least Rishi knows you can't borrow yourself out of inflation. Your party has been taken over by the extreme right just like the Republicans in the US (and you know it) - deficits are fine if it means tax cuts for the wealthy. Part of me wants Liz Truss to win because I think Starmer can beat her but I genuinely fear for this country if she wins - it will lead to further inflation and much more industrial action. It will also make us take the eye off the ball with respect to Ukraine.
He won’t admit his party have been taken over by the extreme right despite Britain First members already outing themselves as party members. It’s an English Nationalist party and Truss will do whatever she’s told to do. Very worrying times ahead.
Or it could be that Britain First released that statement to raise the profile of their organisation and the media reported it verbatim, without any fact checking whatsoever, thus giving them the publicity they crave.
