Precisely: hobbies, leisure pursuits, call them whatever you want, aren't meant to stand up to logical scrutiny. They're an escape, and we all have our preferred ways of escaping: I happen to like climbing to the top of a hill, leaning against a boulder (or, more frequently, huddling behind one) and then walking back down to where I started; could anything be more pointless? Well, maybe Birdy's chosen example...

Stamp collecting, building model railways, standing on the platforms of real ones... each to their own.

For me, nothing beats sowing seeds and watching them germinate. Nature's wonder. Talking to fellow horticultiarists and recommending fertilisers and compost egg and knowing a fair bit. Cooking to obsessional level to replicate restaurant food (helped recently by mates who actually own restaurants who have since given recipes). Enjoying walking and seei g the landscape from high up. Bit of porn here and there. Transportting with my son.
