It might be factually correct but it's also incredibly disingenuous. It's the sort of comment made by clubs like Burnley who have to be frugal, not by clubs who've outspent everyone last summer bar the biggest club in world football.  Fact is, they've spunked a shitload on mediocre players and Smith knows it.

Money spent by club in last transfer window

Those figures are incredible. Without even mentioning Mings, they spent nearly 60 million on Wesley, Matt Targett and Ezri Konsa

Villa's NET spend was the largest in the Prem at £144M, next on the list was Arsenal at £82M that's just unbelievable given their position

It's a bargain, whichever way we look at it!

£17m Matt Targett! Brilliant. Couldn't get in Fulham's team last year. I nominate their Sporting/Recruitment Director for the George Cross

RE: Villa - SW4Baggie - 01-13-2020

In fairness to Villa, their side was an average Champ side with a few pieces of quality in midfield and Abraham’s goals.

When they got promoted they had to buy a whole new team to at least compete, hence the high net spend... unfortunately they appear to have spent £140m badly, and their key players from last season in McGinn and Grealish are still their best players now.

When I look at their signings from the summer, Heaton and Luiz are probably the only ones who I think would improve us. Konsa has bags of potential too, but seems another defender who can play the ball ans has pace but can’t actually defend.

This made me chuckle.

Luiz may be good in a few years, but he's been garbage this season.

I don't give any fairness to Villa, they had by far the largest wage in the Championship and had basically bought terribly in the past few years. It's completely of their own doing.

With the money they've been spending over the past few seasons firstly they should've gone up, secondly shouldn't have been in a position where they had to buy the majority of a whole new team in the Prem and thirdly shouldn't be so terrible after spending 140m!

They've had the highest Championship spend for years to get that team.

There is no 'in fairness to Villa' allowed on here, capiche?

Incidentally, did anyone catch the highlights of Reading (nickname The Royals) v Forest on the EFL programme on Quest last weekend? They made the most of the current crisis by slipping in loads of references to Harry and Megan in about 90 seconds. When Ben Watson slammed in Forest's goal the reporter said "not for the first time this week, the Royals were rocked by a redhead". Top notch punning.
