I'm a runner and do all my training in miles. I'd never set out to do 10km as a training run, but would do 6miles. Likewise if I was at the track I'd work in metres as I know it's a 400m loop.
10km (6.2 miles) is a specific event. As is a marathon (42.2km). It doesn't have to be one or the other.
If you're running a 10km race it doesn't matter if you measure your pace as 6:26min/mile or 4min/km it's the same thing. Not that hard really.
