There's definitely a place for treadmills, they seem to get a lot of stick from people online who are serious about running. An old boss of mine was a 2h20 marathon runner and he did all of his training on a treadmill. Really useful for recovery runs and sessions where you're trying to hit a specific pace.
Still, if you've got the option of a nice trot along the Thames I don't blame you.
