Back to Chamonix for 3 weeks (yay working remotely) and have done my first trail runs in almost a year. Blowing out of my arse on the first 9 and a bit km with 350m of ascent and felt like death in the heat. Somehow almost hit a 400m and half-mile PB on the 7 and a bit km one with 400m of ascent yesterday, despite still feeling like my lungs were collapsing. This was after spending a week climbing and mountaineering up high (claimed the Dent du Geant!) which would've helped with acclimitisation and a bit of fitness.
Anyone over 30 needs to be lifting weights 2-3 times a week if they want to stay mobile in their dotage IMO. Heavy squats, deadlifts, presses, rows. You won't find anything better for joint and bone health, as well as maintaining muscle mass into middle-age. Forget about getting hench or anything, I just do it to remain mobile. A bit of shape around the chest and shoulders is a happy bonus
