Worth a watch

On the Guardian website, they have a video of some of the behind scenes at Capitol Hill on Jan 6th.

Focusing mainly on Nancy Pelosi and her attempts to ensure people's safety and also to ensure that  the vote to confirm Biden as president could take place.

Its a concern that Trump could still be the next president.

Despite knowing that the Republican Party still worships at the altar of Trump, whether it wants to or not, despite finding more and more out about Trump and his misdemeanours and despite the Republicans going all in on crazed policies such as banning abortion, banning books they don't like, demonstrating all kinds of authoritarian tendencies etc etc, it looks most likely that the Republicans will win control of one or both of Congress and the Senate.

In light of the above, that the Republicans have not only retained but seemingly increased their support amongst the American people is a mystery to me and could have not only seismic implications for US democracy going forward, but possibly for the planet as a whole too if the Republicans implement anti-environmental policies along the lines that Trump did.

Not only would the US rowing back on its climate crisis commitments encourage other countries to follow suit, there simply isn't time for this with with the climate change clock ticking inexorably.

Like the Tories, it would make sense for the Republicans to be out of power for decades but, sadly, it's looking like the opposite is going to be true in the US. In the UK at least, hope springs eternal in terms of getting rid of the Tories for a very long time.

Absolutely spot on. The prospect of Republican successes in any forthcoming ballots is particularly grim with regards to the climate crisis. The thought of the Orange Idiot or someone of his ilk entering office is the stuff of nightmares.
