XTC, should have been mega.
Graham Parker and The Rumour.
Not bands, more singer songwriters but: Pete Williams, Jackie Leven.

XTC  "Senses working overtime" is one of those songs that featured in a defining time of my life.

Not sure if he has been mentioned but I give you

Joe Jackson  - a true genius.

Off to see him in York in July-can't wait

Have booked tickets for Birmingham Symphony Hall end of July.

A pub band who somehow made it big in the lull between prog and punk

No, that's just rubbish. Sharp songwriting, extremely talented players. Their kind of music was derailed by punk, a genre where a lack of talent and a nasty attitude were worn as a badge of courage. Them's the breaks.

"Just a pub band" is a cheap insult tossed around by people who think the interminable and turgid outpourings of Genesis after Peter Gabriel left were the pinnacle of musical invention. I don't mind a bit of pretentious prog, but I also like a bit of proper pub rock.

Good post Chesh. Personally I find "Pub Band" is a real compliment. That aside, just check out the track 'Squeezing out a spark', melody and lyrics are amazing.

The Saints. Equally as good as the Pistols or The Clash, just didn’t have that “punk” look. Excellent band.
