Lines person flags offside
Defending players stop
Play continues
Attacking team scores

It came back to haunt against Man City
I told you I’ll be back

Cost them the title twice as Charlton always used to say at after dinner speeches to which Jeff (who was often there) used to reply, "always play to the whistle Jack!"  Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Less well known is that Leeds themselves scored a controversial offside goal in a crucial game v Arsenal nine days later.

Thanks. I was there, escaping with my life and my scarf...
I always thought that Clarke was offside for their goal.
I don't think our famous 2nd would be an issue today.
Neither Brown nor Astle were offside, and suggett wasn't interfering with play.
But what a biased commentary! I wonder whether Barry Davis has had any thoughts on this since?

Thanks for sharing this Cornish. I haven't seen all the highlights before and we should have been out of sight really missing those couple of chances.

It was a little before my time- I started supporting in 75.

Ditto regarding the commentary. Davies really helps whip up a storm- not impressed.

Horrible club Leeds and to think I supported them for a year or two when I was 8 or 9, before my dad took me on the righteous path.

What’s the interpretation of the offside rule here? I know there was no such thing as interfering with play but hasn’t he just ran into his own deflection and not played the ball?

I wasn’t born for another 10 years so I’ve know idea how offside was interpreted in ‘71.
