I worked with Steve a few times when I worked at the BBC in the late 1990s. He was a really nice fella. RIP.

68, which does seem far too young. Steve was a Charlton fan and one of the less precious TV folk you could work with. He had a great sense of humour and was always happy to do what was asked of him. When I worked at the BBC, we used to have Tuesday morning meetings to discuss what'd go in that Saturday's Football Focus. One week, there wasn't a lot going on but it was the FA Cup and I said, 'Look, Bolton are playing Charlton in the cup this weekend and Andy Hunt will be up front for Charlton and, if he plays, Bob Taylor will lead the line for Bolton. They are old team mates from Albion days so a feature on those two would be good.' Boosted by Motty's enthusiastic approval, the idea was given the green light and Steve and I went to Bolton to interview Bob and then went to the Valley on the Friday before the game to interview Andy. It made a good piece although the only footage the BBC had of them playing for us was a scrappy FA Cup goal. I can't remember what happened in the game - I think Bob might have scored and it went to a replay. Steve was good company and thoroughly professional. I'm saddened he's gone. I also used to work with Gerald Sinstadt, who was old then. He's 90 now and still going although I imagine he frequents specialist cinemas less often these days.
