The UK chose to leave the EU, the Customs Union and the Single Market. To access what we have left we can agree to meet the EU standards but if we want to undercut them, the EU (to which we used to belong) can take protective measures. The UK wants its cake and eat it. If we don't have a deal, we WILL be faced with hard measures with CERTAINTY.
It's a bloody disgrace. It would be bad enough WITH a deal. I am spending most of my long waking hours helping clients an industry to prepare for 1 January for cross-border trade. Now the reality is dawning (and HMRC is nowhere near ready to even prepare applicants for alternative measures whatever they say at high level meetings) folk are in shock.
I'm OK. I'm billing more fees than ever. Paid off the mortgage last month 3 years early and raking it in. Brexit suckers.
