Surely players and clubs are insured for pretty much any eventuality?

They are or at least should be. There was some sports insurance bod on talksportshite last night saying pretty much all clubs players are on a blanket company policy but they do have to be added to that policy. 

It just depends on wether they had added him given he'd only just signed.

If not I'd imagine the person who's job it was to do it will be on the dole pretty soon. £15m..... ouch.

Insurance company's are sticklers for the rules and small print.
