Indeed. Though I suspect when challenged Belarus may well point to our history of Extraordinary Rendition.

There was a time when 'extraordinary rendition' and 'enhanced interrogation' were the buzzwords of their day. Like we didn't all know it was kidnapping and torture.

(I'm not making light of this, by the way)

Wonder how much Ryanair charged the passengers for the diversion and escort?

The EU's (and world's) weak response to Russian aggression means that Belarus likewise has no fear of consequences - I wonder actually though if the opposition won and Lukashenko was out whether that would just lead to Russian invasion anyway, as in Ukraine. But I guess it is hard for the EU and UN to respond to aggressively as well - no knowing what Putin would do in response.

Troubling east-west relations again - feels like time is going backwards.

This happened and the Belarusian government just ignored the results, made up some new ones and Lukashenko held onto power.

I wonder what would have happened if the pilot of the airliner had said "We are already closer to Vilnius than Minsk and with a flight plan and landing arranged. We will continue and thanks for the heads-up"

The next and last two sounds he would hear would be a whoosh and a bang to end the flight ........... instead of that bloody bugle call.
