Update: Seems that the discharges into care homes were decided by 'medical professionals' based on advice from scientists.

From 19 March the instruction to the NHS was that "Unless required to be in hospital, patients should vacate their NHS bed". At this point a negative Covid-19 test wasn't a condition of discharge (assuming a test had even taken place), a situation which remained unchanged until 15 April. By that date more than 28,000 elderly patients had been discharged directly to care homes.

I am looking forward to the Inquiry once this is over.

Chances are the real warts and all story will never see the light of day.

And probably few will care; how many people do you know who have the patience for attention to detail these days?

You mean complete lack of leadership and direction from the generals. The Tories have had 10 years to sort this shit out and all they've done is cut services and lined their pockets, a fully funded and working state with strong leadership would have dealt with this.

Incompetent leadership giving no guidance to cut to the bone services - yeah that screams state incompetence  Rolleyes

Exactly... ten and counting years and what is better in this country? I’m sure there are a few billionaires happier but for the vast majority of people what have the Conservative’s achieved? Imo all they have created is division, lack of leadership, Brexit and cuts to services that WOULD have made a big difference to how Covid was / is handled. How they have convinced people that they are best for the country is the only noteworthy thing they have achieved and care about possibly. Utter shambles since Cameron walked into N10

Even Furlough has been a great concept badly delivered. Great at the outset and an excellent policy, but as time moved on it needed to become sector specific. There was little need for the construction industry and, to a degree, manufacturing to carry on with furlough quite early on in all of this. They needed to be encouraged to get back to work safely, they had been given time to get the safety in place whereby they could carry on, they chose (in some cases) to keep the staff paid for by the government.

Other industries, hospitality, travel, definitely needed it carried on until they were allowed to reopen and get back. That should be potentially tapered now as restrictions are still in place but on the whole removed.

The arts business should be the one that carries on where needed until they are allowed to reopen.

Blanket furlough has meant that the government has managed to mess up the one thing that they have done right in all of this.

Just in case there was any ambiguity in my post above, the key phrase was "the instruction to the NHS" - from Matt Hancock via the DHSC. There was no implied criticism of the way the NHS handled the process of discharge into care homes.

There's nothing great about furlough.

Of course, in your head there is nothing between full capitalism and full communism. It's funny how you read 'a fully funded and working state' as something that couldn't work alongside the private sector.

Apart from protecting all those people from being kicked out of their properties, or putting food on the table. Agree with you on the badly delivered part, but that is what happens when you vote for an incompetent bunch of pocket liners who only have one goal.
