Culture Wars
#1
I did start a thread about a year ago regarding this but it got little traction. However it’s now becoming more apparent the chasm between communities in regards to how we see our country, what we identify with, and who we identify with.

Be it Brexit, generation gaps, political persuasion there is very little common ground. Now you could argue that this suits the government as we squabble amongst ourselves and they push on with their agenda but their time will be temporary in the grand scheme of things. However over the long term I think we shall see the majority that could be described crudely as Voteleave types marginalised as those things they identify with as British are seen as out of touch. I genuinely think we are seeing the biggest cultural changes since the 60s.

The Voteleave Party will like this reference... you may have won the battle but you will lose the war.

Did it get no traction because it had little substance? Just think what we’d have seen without Covid at the VE May Day bank holiday - loads of people closing off streets and having a good time together. You really are just a harbinger of doom, fella.

Not only is he a massive doom merchant but he is one of the biggest proponents of the chasm he’s winging about. Particularly on Brexit, politics and the more mature. Not one iota of conciliatory will in any post.

That chip must sit heavy on your shoulder, if the current pandemic cant erase the brexit
Vote from your thoughts then nothing can.

Lets think about who might be left rather who might have been right some 4 years back

Given that brexit is going to have a direct negative impact on the UK's ability to recover from the Covid-recession then I'd say its still a bit relevant.

It’s not just about Brexit it’s about the divide in cultures in the U.K markedly between the generations but it does cut across them too. Now you can argue that as you get older you get more conservative but I think this is deeper than this. We are seeing divisions across society be it on climate change, identity, where we see / want to be as country.

I’m centre left despite the best attempts by some on here to pigeon hole me as some kind of Marxist. The gap between what I hold dear and those that are unquestioning in their support of this current government do is far too big to bridge. Let’s put it this way I doubt any of those criticising my lack of contrition would be accepting of a Corbyn led government with a current record like this one.

Compromise would mean a political move to the centre of politics which I’d be very happy with but is that really going to happen when the gap between cultures is so big?

You will have to help me out.

What are centre politics, what are the policies that would define centre politics.

Here you go...

Centre-left politics or center-left politics (American English), also referred to as moderate-left politics, are political views that lean to the left-wing on the left–right political spectrum, but closer to the centre than other left-wing politics. Those on the centre-left believe in working within the established systems to improve social justice. The centre-left promotes a degree of social equality that it believes is achievable through promoting equal opportunity. The centre-left has promoted luck egalitarianism, which emphasizes the achievement of equality requires personal responsibility in areas in control by the individual person through their abilities and talents as well as social responsibility in areas outside control by the individual person in their abilities or talents. The centre-left opposes a wide gap between the rich and the poor and supports moderate measures to reduce the economic gap, such as a progressive income tax, laws prohibiting child labour, minimum wage laws, laws regulating working conditions, limits on working hours and laws to ensure the workers' right to organize. The centre-left typically claims that complete equality of outcome is not possible, but instead that equal opportunity improves a degree of equality of outcome in society. In Europe, the centre-left includes social democrats, progressives and also some democratic socialists, greens and the Christian left. Some social liberals are described as centre-left, but many social liberals are in the centre of the political spectrum as well.

Are you suggesting we have that currently?

We have ALL of that currently. So what's your point?

More of a mission statement as to what you want, not a road map of how to get it.
