Hold tight the producer massive.

Reaper is free, VST compatible (more on that later), and you get the full version and you can evaluate indefinitely. It's a bit of a learning curve if you've never opened a DAW before but YouTube is your friend. https://www.reaper.fm/

If you have any budget whatsoever the intro version of Ableton would be an ideal place to start and is so widely used there are a million YouTube videos on how you do stuff. https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/live/

Shitloads of free samples/loops: https://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/free-music-samples-download-loops-hits-and-multis-627820

Tons of free plugins/VST's: https://www.musicradar.com/search?searchTerm=free+plugins

VST's are plugins/FX synths for most DAWS.

Can I just chime in that although they aren't necessarily as complex and capable as the computer based DAWs there are some awesome drum machine and synth apps (good on an Ipad) available which are great if you just want to have a little casual piss around with some beats etc / for sketching out ideas. People like Madlib are now able to make proper albums using Ipads etc.

Can't remember what ones I've used at the moment but there you go my onions.

Might be worth arranging catching up at my cousins place some time mate. He's only round the corner from you and has the whole production set up in his spare room.
