Stating he was better than Hoult is the most far fetched thing I think I’ve ever heard on here!

Never rated Hoult personally. But I was a kid. Always remember him being a bit stiff, struggled to get down and was poor with the ball at his feet.

Opinions ay?

That would be true for his latter time here. In the key period - I.e. promotion - he was imperious and incomparable to SJ.

There are others at the club who remember him being a bit stiff to, mind.

Exactly what we need, someone who has a similar skillset to Mowatt.

Hoult, at his peak was perfect for us under Megson, with the defence and organisation we had he was fantastic. However he would have struggled if we were more free flowing and the defence wasn't so rigid since he was very much an old school 'keeper.

Johnstone is better at the new stuff, but Hoult was far better for us at the time he was here.

Aye. Very true.

The defence Hoult had in front of him would have carried Wildsmith or Button through a season and made them look reasonable.

Hoult was signed about half way through 2000/01 and excellent in that season, the promotion year and most of our first season of the PL.

There was England talk - whatever the reason he made a few mistakes in the back-end of that first PL season - costing us points.

He was very good again back in the Champo in 2003/04 - but I agree that he seemed to struggle with agility much more in the GE season

Didn't Hoult have a back injury as I recall after the 2003/04 season and was never the same again. He was fantastic for the first 3 years or so he was with us. If he was playing for a bigger or trendier club he'd have undoubtedly got picked for England during that period.

Yeah. It famously locked up in the 1-1 GE draw, at Old Trafford, which lead to us conceding and Tommy K coming on mid game to have the game of his life

Correct. He couldn’t get across to the fee kick and was replaced.

That wasn’t 03/04 though.
