RE: It's The Ashes (again) - Shabby Russian - 07-03-2023 At the end of the day it's just really poor play from Bairstow. If he had knocked to a fielder in front of the wicket, he would have made sure he was within the crease, until the fielder had done something to indicate that the ball was dead.e g throw the ball to the bowler. In this case because he left the ball, he just assumed the ball was dead, when clearly it wasn't. Carey didn't hang about he caught and immediately threw the ball at the wicket. For my money there is too much of fielders taking a shot at the wicket trying to catch the batsman out of their crease. But it seems to be a thing these days. And if you want to stop what Carey did from happening again, make it a rule that a stumping can only be legal if the fielder is holding the ball when the bails are removed. He scratched his foot to mark his crease and went to speak to Stokes at the end of the over. This wasn't some mankad situation. Yes he possibly did it too quickly but you see that thousands of times in county cricket with no one trying stumpings. Will England recall Wood, if fit, and tell him to bowl 95 MPH bouncers at certain Aussie batsmen ? Wouldn`t mind seeing Warner / Labushagne / Smith cop a few. It could work badly though, their quicks are better. RE: It's The Ashes (again) - rsbaggy2 - 07-03-2023 (07-03-2023, 12:23 PM)Ted Maul Wrote:(07-03-2023, 12:11 PM)rsbaggy2 Wrote: So much outrage. It's clearly rattled you in the extreme. I find agreeing with a lot of what you post. In this instance I can't. Very disappointing. Yes he possibly did it too quickly but you see that thousands of times in county cricket with no one trying stumpings. Nothing wrong with that. After all BOTH sides used the short ball to great effect. RE: It's The Ashes (again) - Geralous - 07-03-2023 No need for report into cricket! Just watch the privilege displayed by the members in the long room! Tells you everything you need to know! Strauss's comments were questionable too. Implying that the trouble and negative atmosphere was due to £25 tickets which attracted fans that wouldn't usually be there. If the toffs at Lord's were getting as upitty as they were (first time I've ever heard the Lord's crowd make any noise) Headingly is going to be poisonous. It should make for a great atmosphere. Ted, you know perfectly well that the Aussies objected to being verbally abused as they walked through the Long Room back to their dressing room. Nowhere else in top level sport can the public get so close to the players. If MCC members can't show a bit of decorum in that situation, then maybe MCC will have to change their rules and keep the members away from the players. No, because he wasn't attempting a run. I think Shabs has come up with a good solution there. But it's justified when roles are reversed. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction? Did none of the Australians as they walked through the long room at any point think "blimey mate, wonder why Horatio is so ticked off?" - if you play stupid games you win stupid prizes and after all it was just a bit of name calling. I suggest they suck it up and carry on as it's Headingley next. As I said play stupid games, win stupid prizes and all that. RS - I too find myself agreeing with a lot of your cricket chat, so apologies for the industrial terminology, wasn't aimed at your good self... was however aimed at Cummins & Co. RE: It's The Ashes (again) - Tom Joad - 07-03-2023 I haven,t met anyone yet that thinks it was not out. The anger is aimed at the Aussies attempting to take the high moral ground. You know, the country that once bowled underarm to not lose a game, that came out with a stainless steel bat, that were caught red handed and had players banned for cheating. Even in this series they've claimed catches on the floor! Ted Maul is bang on. The temerity of complaining about the most placid bunch of spectators going is so far beyond ridiculous it should have been laughed out of Lords. They are the Don Revie's Leeds of cricket. |
