Aren’t work permits usually decided based on the candidate’s experience, salary and the impact of the role? I imagine United fishing on a much more expensive pool may help.

Correct. And it wasn’t Wicky as head coach who had the visa issue. The criteria for an assistant coach will be much harder to meet, and in this case it seems that it was the goalkeeping coach who had the visa problem. The number 2 simply didn’t want to come - not a visa issue with him.
A dose of salts would have sorted that

Consequently, it's likely that his enforced year out has got him chomping at the bit to return to a management role. The "going back never works" mantra of some here has already been debunked with numerous examples and there's no reason to think that someone with his deep-thinking and man management skills couldn't be successful with us for a second time.
