My first ever sub-1:40 half. Pretty chuffed with the time after turning 50 in January.

My PT set me a 3-month training plan, which was horrendous at times, but it did the trick.

Wore carbons for the first time in race. Made a huge difference with recovery, especially on inclines.
But I think they did lead to my back twinging in the last mile and then going into spasm after I crossed the finish line!

Well done on the PB.
Amazing what some structure can do to timings.
I started running again in January - Couldnt run a mile in 12mins (Horrific i know) Did my first "Proper" 5K last week and hit it in just under 27 mins.
Still a way off my PB from circa 10 years ago - but for someone thats done no fitness since until January for circa 7 years - i was happy.

Thank you :-)

The structure made such a big difference My previous training was always 'run as far and as fast as I can'  Big Grin

Great work on your running since January.

Beware of doing too much in them - a few in my Club have been reporting injuries because of them and a couple actually returned them for a refund.

Thank you :-)

Yeah, my back started to twinge about just over 12 miles, and then pretty much went into small, regular spasms after I finished.
I think that was the carbons and how my body was positioned wearing them.

I'd done one training tempo run in them beforehand and my knees ached afterwards.

I am going to limited for races, but see how I go.

I have never run in them but many people swear by them - for racing.

I always got injured during the transition from XC/Road to Track in the spring - the unnatural 'bounce' of synthetic tracks always got me.
I think this is also the case with carbons.

RE: Running Clique - Midget In A Pinstripe Suit - 03-17-2025

Nice work pal. I managed 2 x 10km last week, ducked out today as I couldn’t be arsed and it was cold as down here. Hopefully get back on it towards the end of the week.

RE: Running Clique - UCEbaggie - 03-17-2025

I did the Cambridge half a week ago Sunday. Was very warm and too many runners. I managed a PB - 1:35:40. Doing the Oakley 20mile race on Sunday in North Bedfordshire. It’s hilly. Plan is first 10m easy second 10m at Marathon Pace. This is the last really big mileage week before the Manchester marathon at end of Apri. I’ll be doing 54miles this week

I noticed the difference on the inclines. They seemed to give me more bounce and a quicker turnover, so I was 'dragging' myself uphill.

We normally have 2 club track nights a year. I've always missed them as they are normally right before an event. Keen to give it a go.

Getting out in the cold is always a challenge!

Nice one!

That's good mileage. I quite enjoy 20 mile races, especially on trail.

I'd completely put road marathons behind me, but after this training plan, I am rethinking Big Grin

RE: Running Clique - Ted Maul - 03-18-2025

Reading this thread is making me very eager to get out more, having a six month old is not that conducive to running decent mileage though.

I'm lucky at the moment if I hit 15-20 miles and manage to get out more than three times. Still, the Christmas paunch has largely gone and brighter days are ahead. Major positive for me is that it's coming up two years since I've had any kind of flare up with a troublesome Achilles.

UCE - congrats, great time. Surely aiming for the sub-90 next time out?

Thanks Ted. Not sure about sub 90! Shaving five mins off would be a huge effort. The plan is definitely to try and duck under 3:30 for the marathon. Was going well last year until mile 20 when it all went wrong. Sat on the kerb and rang my wife! She gave me a rocket and I finished in 3:50  in the end. My training has been much better this year but the marathon is on 27 April so if it’s hot any thought of a sub 3:30 will  be over! A running pal of mine got his PB at Cambridge - 1:29:59! Incredible pacing!

If you're running 95mins for a half you'll fly under 3:30.

Bone healed! In physio! Going to be buzzing to run 1km again in a couple months nevermind the marathons!
