Just today I've nodded along whilst my client talked about the "ROI" (several times) on a £500,000 tech investment they're making. When he'd finished I asked what the ROI was in figures and he couldn't tell me. I then questioned why they were making the investment at all. Your premise is exactly the same.

You can’t measure it the way you think things should be measured. That’s a very different issue.

Absolutely. And you don’t HAVE to go to uni to get those but there are tons of kids turning to adults who massively need that. When I look at some of my daughters housemates these three years will be absolutely essential to what they become capable of contributing in that sphere.

I get it all right. But what is the difference between going to University and getting a job in terms of growing up? It's not a question of being right leaning FFS.
I fucked up my A levels first time round because of girls, booze and house music. Fuck me I grew up a lot in the couple of years I went to work and study before going to Sheffield.
The world does not owe you a living whilst you grow up. You can still have fun making all sorts of mistakes, I know I did.

There is a lot to be said for learning in this way, I did pretty much exactly the same.
I agree that a more educated populace is better for all, but thinking that Uni is the only way of getting that learning and shovelling loads of 18 year olds down that road isn't necessarily going to work. People have different learning methods, some study and retain information and reflect that through exams, and some learn on the job. You also need to take into account that people may be better to hold off on FE until they are older, have more experience and are mature. I got my 1st degree in my 20s after a few years of trying different jobs, and my second in my late 30s when I needed a job relevant qualification. There was no way Uni would have suited me, apart from the girls booze and house music element, whilst I was still a teenager.
