RE: UK Covid death toll - baggy1 - 12-22-2021

Weekly update on the numbers in hospital for England is that we have tipped over the 7k mark (7080) which is an increase of 722 (11%) from last Wednesday. London accounts for 664 of those 722, the other regions are a mix of increase with the biggest being the North West having an increase of 127 (14%), single digit % rises for the others (Midlands has got 22 more people in hospital) and a fall in the South West.

Cases are up again and have been that way for over a week now, but there doesn't seem to be much impact on hospital beds other than in London which has seen a 48% increase in hospital numbers in a week.

Either we are in a position where London is the tip of the spear and we are all going to get this hospitalisation increase, or the fact that their vaccination numbers are so low compared to the rest of the country is a major influence on the numbers in hospital. Regionally, with the exception of London all parts of the country have had higher numbers in hospital within the last 4 months.

We are a week behind according to reports on LBC and BBC

That's not being refelected in the figures though Dekka, London started it's sharp increase on the 10th December, we're now on the 22nd and are only seeing a marginal increase (in line with what I would expect for winter tbh)

I don’t think we are going to know until early January where we are as a country, but this is where I have a degree of sympathy with the government in terms of knowing what is proportionate. Purely from an anecdotal perspective I know, one NHS trust has 30 frontline ambulance staff off and three associates of mine who have worked in community settings over the last two weeks have gone down with the virus. This is as much about numbers as it is anything else.

How does this man have a platform on a notional radio? He’s been slowly going down the conspiracy rabbit hole for the past twelve months. Maajid that is not Ian Dale.

Stats for my hospital released, which covers the local area too.

We're starting to see a drop in infections and admissions. Interesting to see if this is due to schools breaking up.

RE: UK Covid death toll - Protheroe - 12-23-2021

3 sets of research all indicating Omnicron leads to less hospitalisations than Delta. All small samples, all come with caveats about previous exposure and the age of those infected.

I'm not religious, but I do pray that if not the beginning the end - then this is at least the end of the beginning.

It does seem to be so Proth.

As horrible as it sounds on the surface, there is some logic to trying to let it spread through the vaccinated population and therefore we may start to see the finish line. However it is not without risk, and of course, if we stumbled on the solution by accident, we can't give much credit to our leaders who only got their through dithering and weak leadership.

Of course all it needs to do is find pocket of unvaccinated people, mutate to a more dangerous strain and back to square 1 we go.

If it mutates again though, Birdy, isn't it likely to become even weaker?

Hmm. If omicron turns into the dominant strain and infects and reinfects with mild symptoms (regardless of vacc status) then I'd hope that's an eventuality we won't have to address.
