Could we not simply swap Pope for Bairstow in the middle of an innings. Or are Keepers set and can't be changed?
Huh? Pope is even more of a part-time keeper than Bairstow !
Maybe so, but how many more chances do you give a wicket keeper before tossing the gloves to someone else? 3 dropped catches and missed stumping! It feels.like when we had Button in goal. You can't lose out by replacing him as he's costing enough as it is.
I'm probably being harsh on Bairstow, but I doubt he'll be reading this dump later on!
Did anyone see that graphic Sky have just shown of Jimmy's deliveries to Carey this morning? Each one on a six pence in the same spot. Incredible accuracy.
He's 40. For-bloody-ty. I won't be able to rotate my arm when I'm 40.
I feel a bit for Moeen here. Clearly struggling with soreness and possibly fatigue due to not being used to being bowled so heavily.
The declaration
The non-selection of a specialist wicket keeper
The non-selection of a full time red ball spinner
All 3 are avoidable situations we have needlessly put ourselves in, but decisions we could be regretting. It's frustrating, but I guess easy to be critical in hindsight.
Who would you have picked as the spinner instead of Moeen? Liam Dawson probably was the only realistic candidate based on current/recent red-ball form. Back in the 1980s there would have been a dozen of excellent spinners to choose from!
This is the issue, isn't it? There's not exactly a choice and whoever I name now you're going to pick apart and laugh, probably rightly so.
We could've done worse than Rehan Ahmed.
RE: It's The Ashes (again) - spudgun - 06-18-2023
Wonder if dropping Stokes is an option as he can hardly contribute with the ball and his batting is very hit and miss, if you will pardon the phrase. He can captain from the dressing room and that might give us more options in our bowling or whether to get Foakes back in the side.

Totally disagree. Rehan is now where near ready and is bowling with no confidence at all this season in red ball cricket. Picking him in the Ashes could well destroy him.

I haven't followed him in the CC but I was impressed with him when we played in Pakistan.
The spin options are a mess, aren't they?
RE: It's The Ashes (again) - spudgun - 06-18-2023
We might need a 'spin by committee' approach this summer, pick a different spinner for each game to see what we have. If any of them shine we can stick with them, but they won't get completely demoralised either if they aren't quite ready at the moment

He did brilliantly in Pakistan but has tailed off badly in English conditions so far this summer.
Yes there are very few spin options. Very concerning.

Absurd idea. In the cauldron of the Ashes? We don’t need to expose them like a lamb to the slaughter. The system prevents them being “ready”. They can’t learn their trade when 80% of the championship is played in spring and autumn.

Reminds me Ashton Agar and how we dealt with him in 2013, was it?

Yep - although he nearly scored a ton!
Brilliant tactics from Stokes in that last period before lunch. It’s never dull under his captaincy!
RE: It's The Ashes (again) - wba13 - 06-18-2023
Huge first innings lead of 7 for England now can we build on it.
So the Aussies are 7 runs behind and it taken them 38 overs more, I know who I prefer watching come on England.
RE: It's The Ashes (again) - SuperBob2002 - 06-18-2023
Finely poised test match. This is why it's the best format to watch. It's ebbed and flowed. We've been on top. Thrown a good position away. Aussies have been on top and have thrown their good position away. Such great drama. There's a variety of differing opinions on here, but I hope we can all agree red ball cricket is the greatest entertainment there is.
I also understand why commentators are saying a one innings test, but it's pissing me off. I don't know why.
