A full single Decker bus went past me yesterday with just one person wearing a mask on it. The country is full of meh whatever people. It ain't no surprise.

This is one of the biggest concerns going into winter - we do appear to have the feeling that 'we're British, we'll be ok'. Masks in shops are probably being worn by less than 50% now, life is pretty much back to normal. Compare this with Spain where I was last weekend where it was virtually 100% and you see a marked difference for some unknown reason.
There are already worrying reports of the impact that having Flu and Covid at the same time will mean for those infected, there are 5k in hospital in England which is a large base number going to winter (there were 3k last year), and we seem to accept 100 deaths a day from covid as normal now again as we head into the worst period.
The whole 'meh' attitude is very surprising to me.

B1 I think your belief in the U.K. populace is far more positive than mine. Far from going through a period of enlightenment as a country we seem to be hurtling towards a new dark age. Experts derided, the science followed only when it fits in with the governments agenda, no rules in place anywhere and population that seemingly if polls are to be believed entirely comfortable with the trajectory of this country ffs!
We are the stroppy teenager of Europe… I won’t to do that, it’s not fair, I hate you (insert scapegoat of the day), I don’t care if my actions hurt anyone else, it’s not my problem, what you gonna do about it?!?

Not really surprising to me unfortunately. The gas lighting of the UK public has been decades in the making for a large percentage of the population culminating in the right wing media's plays to ignore experts (ie accept self appointed 'equal' arguments between a gobby self opininated bigots and a true expert in a subject).
Seeing the government do as they please also always the selfish element to do as they wish without a concern for anyone else.
Agreed about Spain. Was in Tenerife two weeks ago and in the capital Santa Cruz (not quite so much at the resorts but still safety first) it was amazing how virtually all the locals walked around and travelling on buses with masks on and took social distancing seriously. There was a real feel of respect for each other. The main none compliants out there seemed to be Brits shamefully.

Thought it worth a quick update as after a decent sustained period of stable numbers in hospital (over 2 months of small growth or fall) we have had a reasonably high growth rate (20%) in the last week of numbers in hospital taking the figures for England to 6,299.
Probably worth taking that little bit more caution around big groups by wearing masks and washing hands again and doing what you can. Hopefully the half term week next week should bring the figures back to normal and comes at the right time.

I think you falling into the trap boiling frog trap B1 of accepting our ludicrously high Covid figures and deaths compared to other countries as acceptable ‘normal’.

Not at all Dekka, I'm very conscious that we have the same amount in hospital as we did this time last year but I am also aware that we are in a much better position because of vaccinations. The big difference is that we have far fewer restrictions in place this year so I can see the spread being bad, but the hospitalisations being similar.
We also have to be prepared for more restrictions and take them on the chin, we are far less conscious of what is happening than in Spain for instance and seem to have a 'we'll be alright attitude'. The only bright spark I can see coming out of another bad winter is that it should be our last and those that have the 'i don't need to be vaccinated' view will get an almighty kick up the arse.

It's not pretty. Don't get ill enough to need the hospital this winter folks.

It's been like that for years anyway. It's an absolute joke. It needs fixing. A public service is there to serve the people, not the other way around. It's not just about money either. Too many departments are atrociously run and treat staff like utter crap and then wonder why nobody wants to work there. I speak from experience.
A substandard GP service won't help matters either.
