RE: UK Covid death toll - baggy1 - 05-07-2021

Just a quick update on a milestone worth mentioning; we fell below 1000 in hospital (976) in England as of yesterday. The lowest number in the past 14 months was 451 at the start of September. At the current rate of reduction we should get to that in 4 weeks time.

A slight slowdown in the decrease this week but with numbers being so small that isn't a surprise - 12% reduction in numbers and still falling so heading in the right direction.

On the vaccinations front just short of 36M adults (68%) have had their 1st dose and just short of 19M (36%) have had both. Average daily vaccinations is around half a million and they are now taking bookings for those in their late 30s.

The data on the gov website is also giving regional information now with the Midlands having been pretty static for numbers in hospital for a week but dropping more today. Other regions are as follows:
East of England: Reducing numbers with 63 in hospital as of today
London: Pretty static numbers around 275 with a slight dip today (266)
Midlands: Static around 185 with a dip today (157)
North East and Yorkshire: Reducing numbers with 132 as of today
North West: Reducing numbers with 152 today
South East: Static around 60 (58 today)
South West: Reducing with 17 today

Overall all regions are showing reducing numbers even where they are small reductions. Good news all around.

Edit:
One final piece of info: In the Birmingham and Solihull trust hospitals there is 1 covid patient.
The Black Country Foundation Trust there are 2.
Birmingham Community Trust have none.
Birmingham Women's and Childrens have 4.
Coventry and Warks has 1
Sandwell has 20.
University hospitals BHAM has 31
University hospitals COVENTRY has 7.
Walsall has 7

RE: UK Covid death toll - Tom Joad - 05-13-2021

Radio 4 today were discussing the "India" variant. Apparently the large rise in numbers in Bolton is due to under 25's contracting the virus. A slight crumb of comfort came from the fact the already vaccinated didn't appear to be affected (as yet), indicating the vaccine may be ok dealing with this variant. One suggestion was to hasten the vaccinations to the younger in that area. Seems about right IMO.
I know it's a huge concern but I can't help feeling there is a negative spin coming from the way it is being reported. I prefer to remain hopeful but it's amazing how many of my customers have picked up on the negative side and not the positive aspect of this.

RE: UK Covid death toll - baggy1 - 05-13-2021

From what I can see Tom there is little impact on the hospitals and the cynic in me would ask why there is such a big focus, could it be to encourage the take up of the vaccine? The stats are consistently heading in the right direction and I'm not too worried about cases as long as they don't translate into hospitalisations. Bolton NHS trust has seen a rise from 12 to 18 in the last day or so, and greater Manchester Trust has none, with Manchester University holding steady at around 30. It doesn't appear to be too bad but definitely one to watch.

We've prepared for patients coming in with covid, but still not concerned about covid killing them so much. As the vaccine gets round more, should be no concern at all.

That's good to know birdy - covid is something that we will have to learn to live with and will undoubtedly be the cause of death to some, but in the same way that we manage flu through annual vaccination programs and live a normal life we (hopefully) will be doing the same with covid.

RE: UK Covid death toll - Birdman1811 - 05-14-2021

That's really the aim now I think. We can't eradicate it due to the world being far too slow reacting to it. Now we just have to vaccinate the population, and accept its going to still infect people.

Despite the worries over the Indian variant the numbers in hospital have continued to fall although it has risen slightly at the end of the period but with numbers so small it can easily move up and down if you look at it daily. 17% reduction in the last week.

Vaccinations keep trundling on well with over 70% of the adult population receiving the 1st dose and over 40% having had both.

If there was a big issue there it would show in the NW figures and although the hospitalisations aren't falling in line with the rest of the country they are steady at around 150. The midlands is showing a reduction in the last week down to about 140.

With the latest relaxation in place now it will be interesting to see how the numbers progress but as long as the vaccinations keep on at the same pace then I'm not too worried.

Four cases of cases of Covid at my child’s school this week. I’m not convinced the data is keeping up with reality on the ground.

No one thinks we're getting to 0 cases, it's al about hospitalisations and that leads on to deaths. Everyone can get infected with covid if it doesn't cause any hospitalisations. The virus won't, and can't go away, any virologist will tell you that.
