All bands if they last any decent length of time.

Trying to think of a good example.

The last Muse album was genuinely good despite a few horror shows preceding it.

Actually Muse should go into the top five - First 3/4 albums all great then some real stinkers afterwards.

Duran Duran???

I saw a documentary on Fleetwood Mac a few weeks ago BBC4 and Mick Fleetwood was on about video and saying how fortunate Fleetwood Mac were to have been there before video as bands of the video era then got tainted with the style over substance label.
He then went on to say Duran Duran was the one most affected by this and as a result have not got the credit for being very talented- high praise, by someone with the cred.
Those who dare overcome the stereotype should listen to some of the stuff they've done- it's, by and large, excellent.
They were cursed by the fact they were very popular, but considering they did/do their own music, are really accomplished musicians and writers mean those who couldn't see behind the double breasted shirts and eyeliner are very unlikely to ever give them a go.
The Rio album is highly rated by serious rock critic and even singles such a Save a Prayer and Ordinary World are up there with the very best. This is one of their best, got top 3 in Italy, but never made the grade here. Worth watching, just for the  half naked girls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TplEakRFx0M

Queen did that awful pop one in the midst of some good stuff - Freddy going off on a tangent I believe
I presume you are on about Hot Space in 82?
Personally, I went off Queen from about 89, in his last couple of years.
As far as I'm concerned they ended when Freddie Mercury left us.

Cohen: after Ten New Songs it was patchy, and then right at the end there's You Want It Darker and the last thing he ever did is arguably as good as anything he ever did.
Think the biggest artist who comes into this category is Bob Dylan.

On Oasis have always taken the view there is little difference in the quality of their albums - they became less fashionable. There's a lot of filler on Definitely Maybe, there was some really good stuff on their last album (for the life of me I forget the name of it now). Think the most consistent Oasis related albums, have been the Noel Gallagher solo releases.

Since the introduction of the CD the quality of albums have generally dropped - there are obviously exceptions - too many artists indulged themselves by taking advantage of the fact that you could ram around 80 mins of music onto a cd, when in truth there are very few great albums longer than 45 mins in length.
