Just watched last nights Panorama, with our mate Adrian Chiles, called Britain’s Drink Problem. It started out with a woman whose liver collapsed after she spent years walloping around 100 plus units down her. The rest of it focused on how we, regardless of gender, should only have 14 units per week, say Government guidelines.
Minimum unit pricing, as in Scotland, then discussed.
Personally found this whole programme ridiculously weak as no one with any semblance of sense can believe such a low guideline. As my title has shown, the guideline in Spain is way over double ours.
Like many I just drink weekends, but have a flip top head when the time is right. Equally, being Irish background have known many who can throw the drink down. Those who have fallen in love with the demon have never done so by sticking to 15 or so pints a week.
Think the demographics of the problem drinkers should be targeted clearer rather than trying to lecture us about drinking by pretending we’re in trouble so easily when the guideline is a farce.
Eat loads of garlic and onions.
That counters it.
I usually get my dose from a Saturday night XL Donner Kebab.

Oh ,Extra chilli sauce, forgot to include that.
It's the 'drinking culture' of the country that's the problem. In mainland Europe, they drink wine with almost every meal and there are no problems. Only in The UK do we have binge drinking, where people finish work on a Friday afternoon and spend the next 48 hours or so pissed out of their boxes. You can introduce all the 'minimum pricing' rules you want, but until the entire 'culture' of drinking is addressed, nothing is going to change.

. . . . . Particularly as people put it on Facebook as a badge of honour like we’re supposed to be impressed ffs

You always have to shoe horn that one in don't you?
Minimum pricing in Scotland has done nothing to alcohol consumption and the 14 unit limit the Government talks of has no stringent scientific backup, it was made up by an anti-drinking lobby group.

If people enjoy a drink let the people drink.

I'm glad you're taking notice, but I only mention it when it's relevant, which it is when talking drink. Pretty-much everyone from celtic stock can tell a tale or two about the drink and someone's downfall. My uncle, great businessman, killed himself through it. Throat cancer got him in the end, at just 53, but he was in drying out clinics etc and drove his family and my dad to distraction. It's a far unhealthier culture in Ireland than it is even here.
Also the likes of the old Soviet Union have a huge binge culture.
Anyway, that programme was a farce.
Worth adding, I doubt many had sympathy with that woman with liver damage. To drink 2 bottles of wine a day consistently and not think it's doing you harm is inexplicable.
Spent four years in Europe. The Dutch, Germans, Austrians, Danes, Czechs and the Poles all have an excellent attitude to going on the piss. Further to this I refuse to accept that members of several Baltic states, and eastern Europeans of various denominations, only started binge drinking, vomiting and urinating in public places upon coming across Carters Green (even if they do claim they're merely following local traditions). Pft.
