This is shamelessly stolen from James O’Brien. If you have a bright child who is switched on to the world, how exactly do you argue that to get on in this country you have to be honest, competent, hard working and kind/thoughful/empathetic? Or that there is more to life than the greed and the accumulation of wealth?

Over the last decade what evidence is there that any of the above are worth bothering to do? You can lie with impunity, not give a damn about anyone else, be barely competent whether a politician, or public/private sector boss, be a bully and thrive. Then you have the vacuous message that only money and who your friends are can determine your worth to society, and that you should trample on anyone who gets in your way.

This is not a post about lockdowns etc as that’s been done to death. This is about the message that’s been given out by those who are now pontificating to others about attendance, hardwork and ‘doing the right thing’.
Parents. If you set a good example, if you exhibit all the qualities you list as important in your post then chances are you kids will grow up likewise. They can see there is another way to get on in life. Everything is better when we act with a little bit of kindness to one another, kids see this in action and will take it for themselves.

Of the kids I went to school with, those with the biggest mouths and the nosiest parents - you know the type, always up at school complaining at teachers for shouting at their kids - the majority are currently contributing nothing to a society which barely registers their existence.

You reap what you sow.

But do you? Johnson became PM and is a serial liar who is a stranger to the truth and morals, numerous ministers have shown themselves to be liars, bullies and incompetent and yet they are doing absolutely fine. That’s the point the link between doing the right thing and getting on in life is broken. As a parent you can say if you work hard, you will get a good reliable well paid job and yet they see people who do play by the rules and struggle, whilst the likes of Andrew Tate, numerous MPs, CEO’s, bankers etc act way beyond what would in years gone by be acceptable, competent and kind behaviour and earn millions for it
Make the school system worthy of the explanation

The good still far out number the bad Dekka. Fortunately, there is only one job as PM, there are thousands of employers in this country who pay a good wage, employ millions of people - the lion share of which are good honest folk - who all earn a nice comfortable wage and are able to take their families on holiday and not have to worry too much about energy price rises. The fame hungry will always find their way to be seen, it's all they've wanted and those who are successful invent the right image at the right time and become known.

Perhaps very easy for me to say as I'm not a parent but it's a conversation I've had with friends who do have young ones. As a sensible, well-rounded adult, the chances are your child will be similar and as a result will hang around with like minded kids. That's the way I seem to remember it anyway.

No it fucking hasn't. You don't show kids the value of schools by closing them.

If nearly a third of parents don't believe kids need to go to school every day anymore we are truly fucked.

And that public school educated self opinionated twat from Kidderminster ought to know better. The only people in my experience who reckon its a waste a of time working hard and doing the right thing are those who never had any intention of doing either. O'Brien is such cunt. The effect of Lockdowns on education is what he ought to be "debating" (arf).
The focus on lockdowns and covid is very misleading and looking down the wrong alleyway will only yield flawed solutions

I don't agree. If you believe that Lockdowns haven't altered many parents' views about school attendance then you're deluded. We've already had this conversation - I hear about this issue first hand every day.
Of course it’s had an impact but you’re apportioning way too big a slice of the pie. Not an area to argue with me over presence and expertise, however much you wish to
