Don't get why people hate defending so much, and even the very top coaches seem to have forgotten the benefit of a well drilled and organised defence.

But the most successful coaches of the last 3 seasons, are both prepared to take risks and their results have shown them to be right to do so.

Those managers who have been more circumspect in their approach have been less successful. The days of going to a fellow top 6 side and playing for a 0-0 have gone. The top teams those who want to win the league have to look to win every game.

"Attack wins games. Defence wins Titles."

It's always been true, it'll always be true. Last season Liverpool defended well, they won the league, up until last season Man City defended well.

This season they've both given up on defence for some inexplicable reason and so has everyone else. I don't get it.

The high lines are certainly a factor too. I can see a long ball team doing well in the near future.

And the cycle continues.
What i would say is that for football to be a truly great game, there needs to be a fair balance between attack and defence.

And at the moment the way football rules are interpreted, it's too easy for attackers. I don't think VAR has helped, there has been too many penalties this season and with some of them i just don't see what the defender could have done to avoid giving the penalty away.

For example the penalty Brighton got against Man U last week, not sure what the defender was supposed to do, Lampey just cut in front of the defender, there was no way the defender could have avoided contact. Feel Lampey was more the villain than the victim.

Interesting note actually.

Why defend when its almost certain you'll give away a penalty?

The rules this season suck in so many ways

Not just us. I mean all over the league.

I detest Pulis ball too, it's also out of date. But this is ridiculous.

lack of crowd pressure plays a part, Birdy.

A bit, but some of the defending has been comical.

Not seen one team so far where I really felt the defence had any form of cohesive plan to stop the opposition. Every team seems to think it's just a case of scoring as many as possible. It's very weird.

I think you are right to an extent. I would add that on the occasions where defending has been prioritized it has resulted in some unexpected wins. Brendan Rodgers spoke of how against Man City was the first time in 13 years of management that he set a team up to defend and play counter attack, and they beat Man City 5-2. Fast forward a week, Leicester play West Ham who do exactly the same against them, and Leicester get beat 3-0. Both wins were somewhat unexpected, and both were based on defensively minded, counter attackings game plans.

Happened with Leicester to a certain extent. Or at least the ability to use that tactic effectively.
