We didn't have a working testing system in May so we have no idea what the number of cases were. Cases are the worst comparison of the metrics available unfortunately.

We do tend to follow a pattern of France and Italy who are both seeing an increase as well. Difficult one BB, the government were criticised (rightly) for not seeing the signposts and locking down too late last time, they have also managed to keep the 'running blind' problems by not having a test and trace system in place.

The cynicism in me is saying that Dom and Boz have sent out the stooge Whitty to tell us a story about what is going to happen and what will happen will be a shit storm if we don't act. They've not called it the worst case scenario, in fact they've only provided one scenario, but it's being dressed up as the most likely scenario.

Now this is all good for Boz and Dom because this is probably the very worst case scenario not a likely scenario that will mean they will be able to ride in on white horses later and tell us how clever they were and how well they handled the second "wave".
The use and application of Boris and clever in the same sentence are few and far between

Indeed. Plus it's a good day to bury the Russian oligarch story so let's create a sandstorm of shit to make sure we can avoid answering questions about that
Can I just say that whilst we argue and blame each other this diabolical, incompetent truth twisting government get away with failure. Keep em peeled!

I love the way Evgeny Lebedev is now a Russian "oligarch"  Big Grin

His business interests stretch to the Evenings Standard, The Independent and London Live TV in the UK - and he's spent most of his life here.

Rubbish. If you're "really vulnerable" then you should be isolating as much as possible. If the state has to help you through ir then so be it.

The vast majority of people in this country are not "really vulnerable" in a health sense, but may be "really vulnerable" in an employment, business, social  or educational sense and life for them should be going on as close to normal as possible.

In a country with a liberal history like ours I'm amazed this needs spelling out.

So what your saying is the vulnerable and those that care for them must isolate themselves until we have a vaccine? Why can’t selfish fuckwits not just try and think of others and do simple things like wear a mask and keep their distance instead of behaving like fucking toddlers stamping their feet at every opportunity?

Again stop pretending you care about the vulnerable, you supported and campaigned for a party who have disproportionately attacked them for a decade through austerity. Now you’re saying they should be supported by the state so you and your other fellow Libertarian’s can do whatever you like?
Week 37 (to 11th September) figures are out and following a big dip in week 36 we are back to normal deaths for the time of year with 9,811 deaths for the week compared with 9,513 in 2020 and 9,306 as the 5YA. It's worth pointing out that against the 5YA we are pretty average for the last 18 weeks (since the beginning of June). It's also worth pointing out that the increase in excess deaths didn't start until the week ending 27th March which means that apart from April and May we have largely been on an average year for excess deaths. Those two and a bit months accounted for excess deaths of nearly 60k in E&W against the 5YA.

So why the extra measures from the government? The usage of positive test cases as any comparison with back in March is useless as we didn't have any type of testing system outside of hospitals at the time and the testing system we have now is pretty pathetic. Amongst many failures this is the biggest failure of this government - they have had 6 months to get a working testing system, they could have simply got one off the shelf but decided to create one from scratch and have failed miserably.

Patients admitted to hospital - On the 19th September (why they can't get their own webpage data up to date at such a critical time is another issue) there were 204 in England people admitted to hospital with covid. Again it's difficult to compare because they didn't start measuring until 19th March when there were 586 people admitted in England - unfortunately by that time it was multiplying quickly and by the 26th March there were admission of 1,639 peaking on the 1st April with 3,099 admission. The current figure is increasing and has doubled since the 8th September, this is obviously where the concern has come from. They locked down too late last time which has directly led to the current shambles, and don't want to be burnt twice.

Patients in hospital - in England as at 21st Sept (a surprising date seeing as the admission can only be measured up to 19th) the patients in hospital is 1,261. On the 20th March the figure was at 1,541 and it increased rapidly (27th March - 6,245, 3rd April 12,844 and peaking on 10rd April with 17,047), all of those figures are for England.

And Patients on ventilators - again really difficult to measure as the data appears to only start in England on the 2nd April with 1,494 in England. We are currently on 154.

There are many ways of reading the data and using that for your argument but it is clear that the numbers of hospital admissions are increasing and that number is the precursor to numbers staying in hospital, numbers on ventilators and deaths further down the line. Any lockdown that is being implemented is proposed as being lighter touch than before although it is also clear that a couple of months of encouraging people to get out into bars and restaurants has coincided with an upturn in hospital admissions.

For what it's worth my view is extend furlough for hospitality, entertainment and travel industries and let everyone else get on with life whilst being careful. No mass gatherings and look after your loved ones.

Buckle up because going on the past few months this bunch of muppets is likely to fuck it up.
Be interested to hear your thoughts on the impact of the false-positives seeing as its wheeled out every time the anti-lockdown lot get chance?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.
