A car crash? Really? I heard spring break was chaos. Not sure about the rest being a car crash.

But the point is, “let’s get back to normal” does not mean Brazil. Apples and pears. Malc’s right, no vaccination and letting it run riot is the root of Brazil’s problems.

Getting back to normal with the vaccine has to be the aim, or I don’t know where we’re going.

It's simple, get as many vaccinated as possible and we will get back to normal. I keep saying, if people want to continue to want it both ways (no vaccination and open up) then we are going to be back in lockdown. It's not rocket science.

And I'm going on what my colleague said, another went to florida during spring break to their beach apartment and stayed in for the whole time with quick trips to the supermarket. And I don't see any reason to question what they said, they are there on the ground.

Indeed, as I said, high vaccination rates to get back to normal. That’s not like Brazil was my point.

I’ve said before I believe there’ll be high vaccination rates (very high in over 50s) and still another lockdown next winter but got called a doom merchant and told it was different this time due to the vaccination programme. I note SAGE are worried about a third wave being as bad as January’s. If that’s the case after this many vaccinations, we have no hope. Literally no hope. Let’s hope they’re wrong.

Spring break was chaos yes. I don’t think Florida in general has been a car crash or the pubs and restaurants wouldn’t have stayed open for the last 7 months.
Clotting.

Johnson looks really ill the last few weeks. Anyone else thought this?
There will be a 3rd wave, there will be deaths. Its a pipe dream that we can eradicate this thing. There will be calls to lockdown but as long as vaccines work with some efficiency, I don't see the govt locking down as we have done. It will be difficult to govern, working out what is acceptable deaths wise but sadly we have to accept that people will die from this and it's another cause of death that will live amongst us.
To some, probably a few reading this, will find that distasteful but locking down 2 or 3 times a year simply isn't sustainable and will cause far more pain that it stops.

I have not been against lockdown. I have suffered personally from losing people close. But you simply cannot just keep kicking the negative effects of lockdown can down the road before we suffer implosion far worse than covid.

Totally agree Rich. Great post.

My distrust of the government comes from the ever moving goalposts. Back to normal by Xmas, then Easter, then summer, now 2022 being suggested. Vaccines for freedom, now vaccines and two tests a week and it might still not be enough. I don’t understand that. The vaccines stop serious cases in a huge proportion, and a huge proportion of serious cases were already in over 50s. A huge proportion of these have had vaccines. If this isn’t enough, combined with a decent uptake on the under 50s (which there will be), we are fucked. And I mean fucked.

I believe if there’s lockdowns in the autumn there will be riots. I’m not joking. And I believe this is one of the significant reasons they’re trying to get the Bill through parliament to come down harder on protests/riots. I believe the government are expecting chaos.

Many people think we’re on the home straight. I hope they’re right and I’m wrong, genuinely. I believe the chaos hasn’t even started yet. Sorry for the pessimism. Just my gut feeling. I really really hope I’m wrong.

Where we probably disagree, is that the govt will lockdown again. I don't think they will. Some restrictions at most. I believe that vaccines will work well enough for the NHS to cope. There will be calls to lockdown if it gets stretched and people are dying but that's absolutely no different to every winter. The acceptance that people will die is a bridge we have yet to cross.

The vaccines certainly should work well enough for the nhs to cope. That was the aim, protecting the nhs. I feel some people have lost sight of that and reducing covid at all costs has taken over. My suspicion comes from the ever moving goalposts from the government, but I hope you’re right about lockdowns as they simply can’t continue.
Agree on most of that, as long as the hospitalisations stay south of 10k then we will be ok, and to be honest that's where I think we will be. As said there will be deaths and I expect them to be in a similar range to Flu (15-20k a year) so there will be excess compared to where we were pre-2020 but that is unavoidable.

The reason why the government have kept 'moving the goalposts' is because of the stupid stances taken early on and through until December. When they realised that they had fucked it up royally, and they had to put the 'Steve Baker's' in their box as they were being shown to just be dangerous, they adopted the approach that most of us could see from early on. There's a lot riding on the vaccines and I think they are now being too over cautious with their predictions but at least they are being that rather than reckless which is where they were before.

I will keep on saying it but for anyone that doesn't have the vaccine, and if that occurs in enough numbers, then they are risking putting the whole country back into restrictions. This isn't a time for people to whinge about free-will when having the vaccine is virtually risk free and will provide the freedoms we all want.

Edit - the 10k figure will be during any peak time (Flu season In guess) not normal times where it should be less than 5k at worst. And there will be nervousness when it starts rising again (which it will) resulting in restrictions at that time.
Thought it was because those idiotic Europeans had screwed up their vaccine rollout?
