We have the best infrastructure in the world, almost all elements of primary and community healthcare under government control. We don’t have the tests nor a government prepared to pay the market rate.

Wonder where the 500k figure has come from? All current online reports that I found (including one from today) say 160k max per week...

Then again we should be ramping up a lot next week too and China are apparently send 50k test kits to Europe as well.

Those 160,000 tests a week the Germans carry out? Are the kits made in Germany, by any chance? If we learn anything from this pandemic, it should be that we need a strong manufacturing industry.

Germany is more of an outlier though. Other European countries struggling to test to that degree eg France, Spain, Ireland etc
Italy only 150,000 a few days ago despite extent of outbreak - fairer to compare across a number of states
