Perhaps we can go back to listening and respecting experts and science again? After years of bullshit from the likes of Trump, Gove etc. This may be a turning point away from populist nonsense and a return to rational thought. Science and experts seem very popular at the moment with the media unlike barely four months ago where professional bullshitters were the very height of fashion.

I doubt it but trying to find something positive in this mess we are currently in.

What? That makes no sense. I’m saying science and experts are who we turn to when the shit hits the fan. The problem is not all experts agree and who knows if our experts are right or others are. However I’d rather have scientists and medical experts working collaboratively across the globe to solve this problem than dismiss them. There was / is a distinct anti-education, intellectual feeling amongst the population over the last few years. It wasn’t helpful or ahem clever!

You are both correct about cheap political point scoring of course but T74 I would say Ebola was far more of a threat to life, for the majority, than the present virus

It's a problem right enough but is it going to be worse, say, than 1968 and the "Hong Kong flu" that killed 80,000 folk in the UK?  It's about management and proportion. If there was a world of instant news in '68, we might have had the same sense of doom.

HK flu was a strain of influenza and therefore was easy to apply assumptions to and model the disease, therefore allowing for easier containment and management of it. The main criticism regarding the UK government response to coronavirus from medical experts both within and outside the UK is our application of said assumptions to this virus for the disease management protocols.

Coronavirus is not a strain of flu, it's a strain of SARS.

I was really talking about communication and advice/facts dissemination.  Also, 68 was only just over 20 years after the trauma of a major war so people had a different perspective.   The past is a different country.
