It's telling that Brentford fans are more worried about losing the set up behind the scenes and are confident of a more than adequate replacement.

It’s not really a lot of fans talk absolute shite. Set-ups work or don’t work with the right people in place. The structure itself may as well be written on a fag packet.

The right people are in the background and those people remain at Brentford. Dean Smith is a decent manager but he wasn't the sole reason for their current lofty position.

But ultimately the Head Coach / Manager will still have a key role in the success of a team. Get it wrong or make some backroom staff sacred cows foisted upon them never works over a sustained period. I console myself with this now Villa have the overbearing Terry alongside Smith.

Just making the point that Smith was a small part of a very good process. Have a look at the record of some of the coaches that have left Brentford in recent years for supposedly bigger things, Uwe Rosler and Mark Warburton what are they doing now?

Glad we have Darren Moore. Actually like the lot of them.

Imagine if we'd employed him and he then dumped us for the Villa. *Shudder*

No manager ever is, even Fergie relied on his back room team

A bit saft to say any Manager was the sole reason for success

Some rely more heavily though.

Fergie was successful throughout his career whoever was behind him

Its the old head coach v manager debate. Smith very much carrying out the role of the former at Brentford.

Fergie always recruited the best number 2s around. That includes Steve McClaren who many forget was number 2 in their treble winning season.

A non league manager I know had a brief chat with Fabio Capello at an airport when their flight was delayed. He asked Capello what single piece of advice he would give about football management.

"You're only as good as the people around you" was his response.

Brentford finished 5th in the championship before he joined. The following seasons 9th, 10th and 9th hopefully he maintains the mid table spot with Villa

Hope so. Some lauding Smith were writing off DM after 1 game though they won't admit it - remember that and treat their expertise with a pinch of salt. It may work for villa but that may find Bruse did as good a job as possible after all and they ain't that great.
